The Stitched Art Society

A Place to Celebrate and Elevate Stitched Art

IMG_20200413_133720_2.jpg

Our Beginning

Here is where we start: community. Meet those practicing the stitched arts, see their work, read their stories, and find inspiration to elevate your own work.

For far too long stitched works have been considered craft. Great strides are being made to see such work as art, not just a craft or hobby. We want to be a part of that movement.

We celebrate and elevate stitched works of art by those who have made a place for themselves in the stitched art world and others who are new the stitching community.

The Hooped Art Library

It’s time to start the Hooped Art Library (HAL) an endeavor to collect hooped art from around the world. Embroidery, cross-stitch, fabric collage, art quilts - anything fiber art related in a hoop to showcase that stitched and fiber art is indeed art.

Imagine, a space dedicated to showcasing hooped art. Visitors can see hooped art from across the country and around the world, and hopefully, find inspiration to start their own hooped art piece.

There’s no limit to the number of pieces that can call the HAL home, but to start my goal is 100 hoops.

To showcase the hooped art, I will:
A) have an online library of the acquired pieces which will include information on the artist as well as the inspiration and the story behind the hooped art. Profiles will link to the maker’s website or SM page.

B) Gallery showings of the HAL so viewers can see this incredible collection, in person. The initial shows will be in various locations in Augusta, KY, Cincinnati, OH, and surrounding areas. Information shared about the pieces on the online library will also be shared in the gallery shows.

C) Main goal, a permanent SAS Center with a library, classroom, gallery, and the HAL.

Acquiring Hooped Art

If you would like to donate a piece to the HAL, I would be honored. Please email me at stitchedartsociety@gmail.com and I will send you a form for you name, title of the work, materials, and prompts to help you tell the story of your piece.

HAL Packets: I will make packets available for purchase: hoop, fabric, a form to share all the details about your work, and a return envelop with some postage paid (for pieces being mailed within the US).

Financing the HAL
100% of the proceeds from my hand embroidery work at the Augusta Art Guild in Augusta, KY goes towards the Stitched Art Libraries (Cincinnati at the Mercantile Library and the library within the Augusta Art Guild) and the Hooped Art Library.

You can also donate to the SAS, the fiber art arm of the Augusta Art Guild.

The SAS Library Augusta, KY branch in coming together nicely. A few members of the Augusta Art Guild spent time yesterday tiding the guild, arranging art, and creating a community space for art classes, workshops, and art social gatherings. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of my work will go to support the SAS. Next time you are Augusta, KY, be sure to stop in the guild and make a purchase.

ALSO!! The second Saturday of the month I will be hosting a Sit & Stitch at the Augusta Art Guild from 9:30-11:30. Anyone working in fiber art can bring their WIP and enjoy some fresh coffee and conversation. For those wishing to learn embroidery, I will have plenty of material on hand to get you started. The S&S is free, but donations are appreciated to keep the program running. https://www.augustaartguild.com/sas

What’s Next for The Stitched Art Society

3.2.24 I think it’s time to share some exciting news!! The Augusta Art Guild, will be hosting Pax Rwanda: Embroideries of the Women of Savane Kabuye. This show, which has travelled extensively, was on hold during COVID. Now, it’s back! The Augusta Art Guild, with the help of the SAS, is hosting the show through the month of November, 2024. Pieces will be on display at the Augusta Art Guild as well as historic Echo Hall. As part of this amazing display of embroidery work, we will be hosting a Fiber Art Month in Augusta with a wide array of fiber art classes and workshops.

Happy New Year! First, I wish you all a wonderful new year. I continue to receive donations of fiber art related books, thank you!! The Mercantile Library is undergoing renovation and is temporarily housed at a new location in downtown Cincinnati. The SAS Library is safely tucked away until the renovation is complete. ~~ In Augusta, the Augusta Art Guild is using the winter months to paint, clean, reorganize, and prepare for a new year of art. I am building the library and housing books in my den until the guild space is ready for me to deliver and set up the library.

10.30.23 The SAS is now part of a non-profit! I am thrilled to share that the SAS is now part of the Augusta Art Guild (AAG) in Augusta, KY. The AAG is a collection of talented, dedicated artists and makers who showcase their work at the guild, offer art instruction and inspiration for the community, and provide art classes for the local school. As part of the AAG, the SAS is now the fiber art arm, if you will, of the Guild. The AAG and SAS are combining our resources and our connections, and pooling our ideas to have a greater impact on the community.

As part of the AAG I will ensure that some projects directly benefit the Augusta community while continuing to have an international reach and engagement. To that end, I have establishing a second SAS Library to be housed at the AAG. I have already begun the process of acquiring books for the second library which will officially open in the spring.

Check out the SAS at the AAG! Perhaps consider making a donation, today.

I love maps. I believe it started with my dad, who reads maps like others read the morning paper. My favorite is the DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteers books: an entire book dedicated to one state.

Let’s Grow the SAS Library!

July 19th UPDATE!!!

I am so happy to share that this piece was SOLD to a new supporter of the SAS Library!!

Every library started with a book, one book. The same is true with the SAS Library. One book became a few, then a nice collection of books. It’s a modest start, as all new ventures are. The SAS Library is fortunate to be housed within the Mercantile Library in downtown Cincinnati. The library is historic, houses a wonderful collection of books and art, and is simply beautiful.

One day we hope to have our own establishment with a library, museum, and gallery. Until that day, our collection is on display at The Mercantile Library. Members can check out books, and non-members who are welcome to enjoy the library during regular hours, are encouraged to browse and while away an hour, or even a day in the library and the SAS Library collection. You may also contribute to the library by purchasing a title from our Amazon wish list.

Stitched Art Spotlight

We highlight artists working in embroidery, quilting, collage, cross stitch, and needlepoint. Meet the Artists →

When I first started stitching I saw the work of artist Kristine Stattin and it spoke to me. I was drawn to her colors, texture, and mostly her ability to be loose and free with her design. Being free, letting the colors and stitches take you where they want to go is something I struggle with, and I am sure I am not alone. MORE

Long & Short Term Goals

So many ideas. As we grow, we will introduce some exciting projects. Such projects include curated online gallery shows, traveling art exhibits, group projects designed to create one final piece to be shared around the country, and a sister-city stitched art project with another country as well as community outreach programs.

One stitch at a time…..
For now, join us as we begin to introduce you to amazing, inspiring artists via our website and social media.
